Renewable Energy Ireland

From January 1, 2009 all buildings for sale or rent will require a Building Energy Rating (BER). This is a comprehensive guide on the energy performance of the building.

eirgreen have registered BER Assessor's to issue BER Certificates for both new and existing dwellings.

Contact eirgreen today for your Building Energy Rating and we will issue your BER Certificate complete with the Building Energy Advisory Report.

Governement Grants Available for Renewable EnergiesGovernment Energy Grants
The government operates a number of grants to householders who wish to purchase a new renewable energy heating system for their home.

These grants are run by Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI), under "The Greener Homes Scheme Phase III" which was introduced as of the 22nd of July, 2007.

Solar Panel Grants - Solar Water Heating System

For a solar water heating system the amount of grant available depends on the aperture area (m² of solar) installed and is calculated at €250 per m² of flat solar plates, up to a maximum of €1,500 and at €300 per m² for a vacuum solar tube, up to a maximum of €1,800.

To be eligible for a grant under the "Greener Homes Scheme Phase III", homes must be at least 1 year old and that no grant has been received from the previous Greener Homes Schemes, Phase I and Phase II.

eirgreen consultants can assist you with your grant application and explain the steps and procedures to acquiring your grant. Grant approval must be received from SEI before purchasing or paying a deposit for any solar equipment in the form of a letter of offer from SEI. This takes a minimum of 21 days after SEI has received the grant application and eirgreen only use approved and registered installers with SEI on all our projects. Grants are also available through the "Greener Homes Scheme Phase III" if you are installing renewable energy heating system such as Biomass, Gasification or a Heat Pump.

There has never been a better time to install a renewable energy source in your home, save money and help the planet and the effects of global warming.

Please note only one grant will be provided per dwelling under Phase III of the Greener Homes Scheme. Strict terms and conditions apply for all grant applications and the above information is a short guide to the grant application process. Please visit the SEI website for full details.

Home Energy Saving Scheme (HES)

With an estimated 1 million homes in Ireland requiring heating upgrades the Minister for Energy Eamon Ryan launched a €100 million Home Energy Saving (HES) Scheme this February. The goal of this scheme is to assist householders to improve the insulation in our homes, save us money and create needed employment across the energy section. The initiative known as the Home Energy Savings (HES) scheme has a number of grants available to help in the cost of improving the energy ratings of our homes. There are incentives to replace old boilers with new high efficiency gas or oil fired boiler with better heating controls. Maybe you are happy with your own system but have no room thermostats or zone heating or when requiring hot water in summertime, you have to turn the heating on in the entire house, well there is also a grant to improve on this. Wall and roof insulation levels can also be upgraded through thicker insulation in the attic space or through cavity wall retro insulation or with dry lining with thermal plaster boards. It gets better - there is a minimum requirement that the first grant application must be for a grant value of €500 or greater. The following is a guide to the amount of grants available:

The scheme is administered by Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) – this means all work carried out under this scheme must be done by a contractor registered with the SEI. To be eligible for the grants a house must be built prior to 2006 and one of the best ways to highlight what is required for the house is to have a Building Energy Rating (BER) on your house. A grant is available for €200 towards the cost of a BER. It is not necessary to have grant approval ahead of undertaking the ‘Before’ BER.  However the grant of €200 is only available to participants who both undertake measures/upgrade works and provide an ‘After’ BER when works are complete. About Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI)
Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI), formerly the Irish Energy Centre was set up by the government in 2002 as Ireland's national energy agency. They have responsibility for improving energy efficiency, development of renewable sources of energy and reducing the environmental impace of energy production and its impact on greenhouse gas emissions. With a mission to promote and assist the development of sustainable energy throughout Ireland, SEI operate a number of grants to assist in the purchase of renewable energy heating systems and essential support on all aspects of sustainable energy, reducing our carbon footprint and benefiting the environment.

Water Grants - Water Well Grants
The efficient supply of water to homes and industries is the responsibility of the 88 local authorities around Ireland. The funding for maintaining and improving the water supply infrastructure (pipes, filtration and disinfection systems) comes from the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government. Outside of council supplied water there is a "Well Grant Scheme" available to householders with private wells who need to remedy serious deficiencies in the existing supply of water and bring the water up to EU standards and to provide a new piped supply of water for domestic purposes. These works are covered under the water grant scheme. They consist of one or more of the following:

    • drilling or commissioning a new well
    • rehabilitating an existing well, including deepening or relining an existing bore or the removal of silt, providing or upgrading a supply of water from a surface water source
    • the construction or improvement of a pump house, piping or other facilities in connection with the supply of water
    • the provision or improvement of mechanical or electrical equipment or facilities in connection with the supply of water, or the provision or improvement of facilities or equipment for the treatment of water

To be eligible for a well water grant you must meet the following criteria:

    • House is over 7 years old
    • You haven't received a grant to house with last 7 years
    • You're not connected on a public water supply

Please note the scheme does not apply to houses to which a public or group scheme water supply has already been provided or can reasonably be provided.

The maximum grant available is approx. €2,050 or 75% of overall cost of works. This figure varies between the local county councils. Householders must fill in the local WG1 form available from the county council and use a contractor who is registered for VAT and holds a current tax clearance certificate. Additional documents such as a site map, one or more detailed quotations and directions to the dwelling must accompany a well grant application from. A detailed water test needs to be taken before and after any work is completed to ensure the proper water treatment system is installed. A prior inspection of the work needs to be carried out as well as the issuing of a certificate of approval before any work can commence.

eirgreen can carry out detailed water tests and provide assistance in filling out the well grant application forms, go through each step to ensure the householder understands the process.

Feasibility Study - ReHeat Deployment Programme
The Renewable Heat (ReHeat) Deployment Programme was launched in March 2007 which provides assistance through Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) to industrial, commercial, public and community premises in Ireland. The Renewable Heat Deployment Programme focues on renewable heating systems and their implementation into the industries cutting carbon emissions and the reliance on fossil fuels. These energy saving technologies include Woodchip Boilers, Pellet Boilers, Solar Hot Water Heating Systems an all Heat Pumps. Grants of up to 30% of eligible costs is available for Capital Investment projects in these renewable energy products and a grant of up to 40% of eligible costs is available for Feasibility Study projects.

eirgreen can carry out a detailed feasibility study on your building to determine different ways of reducing carbon emissions by incorporating alternative energies. The feasibility study will assess the viability of the project, possible alternative solutions and recommendations on the best fit for you. After eirgreen has completed the feasibility study the research and information uncovered will show you where savings can be achieved in energy costs. eirgreen can assist in the application process of 40% for the feasibility study.

eirgreen today for more information.

Feasibility Studies
Grants are available of up to 40% for a feasibility study of your building to determine the best practice on energy consumption and the implementation of renewable energies. The feasibility study is a detailed report on reducing your heating costs and lowering your carbon emissions.

For further details on the energy feasibility study go to "ReHeat Deployment Programme" or contact eirgreen today.
