The quality of your drinking water is important to your health as our bodies are approx. 70% water, and needs good clean water to maintain proper health and function. Water is essential for the digestion of food, the transport of food to the tissues, the elimination of body wastes, the circulation of body fluids and for the regulation of body temperature. Our blood is 90% water and even our brains are 85% water. The purer the water we drink the healthier we will be. Water - plain, properly filtered water - is an overlooked and essential nutrient and maybe your missing ingredient to a healthier, more vibrant, and longer life.

Introduction to Ireland's Water

Water Treatment SolutionsYou would think in Ireland we could never have a problem with water due to the amount of rainfall we receive each year, but nearly all water consumed in Ireland has been through a water treatment process or at least it should be. For years when a new water supply was sourced, this was first tested and if given the all clear, as far as the consumer is concerned the water was safe to drink. However over the years our water supplies are vulnerable to a lot more contamination due to more intense farming, industry and a staggering amount of housing development. This all told puts a huge strain on the natural ecology system that was a natural filter of our drinking water. Today we hear in the news of water problems not only from the cryptosporidium and lead contamination in Galway but the entire country is suffering from poor water quality that fails to be fit for human consumption.

Water Treatment

Water treatment is a process of removing existing contaminants in the water by filters or with the addition of chemicals to bring the said water up to a standard that is fit for human consumption and does not have an adverse effect on human health. eirgreen is a complete water treatment company and have the knowledge and expertise to treat all water problems. Our full range of water treatment products clean your water, either domestic or industrial and help you stay protected against harmful bacteria. Water contains hundreds of different components, so each water treatment system is unique to the water source we treat. There are a number of different water treatment options available to solve different water problems but first we must look at water quality in Ireland.

Water Quality in Ireland

Water is essential to our everyday life in fact the human body consists of over 70% water so the cleaner the water we drink, the healthier we will all be. Water hydrates us, keeps our temperature in check and flushes harmful toxins from our body. We rely completely on water each day for drinking, cooking, making tea /coffee etc and drinking regular amounts of clean water will energise your body, boost your health and help your body to function at its best.

The water source in Ireland comes from rivers, lakes and wells and today due to the increased use of fertilizers, run-off from septic tanks or agricultural slurry pits, industrial and household liquid waste the quality of our drinking water is increasingly coming under threat. Wastewater treatment plants cannot always guarantee the quality of our drinking water. In fact, tap water contains all sorts of dissolved impurities as we see in our kettles, showers and sometimes in the bottom of our cups and also we sometimes smell the chemicals used to treat the water by our local county councils.

One of the most dangerous chemicals used in Ireland is Fluoride. This chemical is added to our drinking water to supposedly benefit our teeth. 73% of people in Ireland are forced to drink uncontrolled, unmonitored amounts of this chemical daily. The Fluoride added to our drinking water is a fertiliser waste imported from Holland and yet 98% of Europe says NO to water fluoridation.

Bottled water is a popular option as consumption of bottled water in Ireland has ballooned in recent years - going from 113 million litres in 2001 to 193 million litres last year. The average person now drinks 44.9 litres of bottled water per year, compared to just 29.3 litres seven years ago A recent report on bottled water (November 2008 – Food Safety Authority of Ireland) found that some bottles of water tested reveal that harmful bacteria, including E coli and human faeces have been found in bottled waters on sale throughout the country. Environmental health officers found 7.2% of bottled waters they sampled for the report were in breach of either legal or EU guidelines. The only real solution to guarantee high quality drinking water that is free from contamination is to treat it yourself at the kitchen sink at the point of use.

eirgreen supply and fit water treatment systems for all types of water problems to include Bacteria, Hardness, Iron and Manganese, Hydrogen Sulphide, Brown Water, Taste and Odour.

The water treatment system treats, purifies and softens water for homes and businesses and our sales team will talk you through each step and can advise on the best fit solutions.

Hard Water

Hard water or sometimes referred to as limey water is caused by dissolved minerals in the water mainly Calcium (Ca) and Magnesium (Mg). Water is naturally soft but once it has fallen from the sky it percolates through the soil and rocks, and dissolves chalk and limestone. The Calcium in the water comes from limestone and chalk, while the magnesium in water usually comes from dolomite rock. The water hardness varies from county to county, however it is particularly bad across the midlands and south east.

Hard water is generally not harmful but it can be costly on electrical goods. Hard water when in contact with electrical elements causes the lime to form a scale around these elements making them less efficient and eventually they will stop working. All appliances that are in contact with the water will be effected such as the kettle, iron, dishwasher, washing machine, shower, hot water cylinders, radiators and boilers. Expensive to replace but hardness in water is easy to solve.

Solution: Water Softener

Iron and Manganese

Although Iron or Manganese in water is no risk to your health it can cause a lot of problems for the home. Iron and Manganese gets into the water by contact with rocks and minerals underground. The water may have a taste but to any householder with Iron and Manganese in the water the biggest difficulty is the staining and built up problems.

The presence of Iron in the water causes a reddish / brown stain on laundry, porcelain, dishes, utensils, and glassware while the presence of Manganese causes a more brownish / black stain. Deposits will build up on pipe work, water heaters, tanks and all that comes in contact with the water. Again treatment of water with high Iron & Manganese is similar to the hard water problem and is easily solved.

Solution: Iron and Manganese Aeration Filter

Coliform Bacteria in Water

If Coliforms Bacteria are found in the water supply this is extremely dangerous to humans and can cause sickness, diarrhoea and in some cases death. Coliform Bacteria are found in human and animal waste and can enter the water system by runoff from woodlands, pastures, septic tanks and sewage plants, animals and wild fowl. Many Coliform bacteria enter natural streams by direct deposition of waste in the water and the runoff from areas with high concentrations of animals or humans. Our most famous and well known Coliform Bacteria in Ireland is Cryptosporidium.

eirgreen treatment methods for Coliform Bacteria in water include the use of filtration, chlorination and ultraviolet irradiation.

Solution 1: Reverse Osmosis Unit
Solution 2: UV Light Filter

Nitrates in Water

Nitrates are nitrogen-oxygen chemical units that combine with various organic and inorganic compounds and are essential nutrients for plants which they take from the soil. Any excess nitrates are then leached into the groundwater. Additional Nitrates in the water usually come from run off from fertilizers, decomposing plants and animals and all animal and human wastes. High levels of Nitrates can cause health problems, including Methemoglobinemia, commonly known as "blue baby syndrome".

These Nitrates enter the bloodstream and interfere with the bloods ability to transport oxygen causing symptoms such as shortness of breath, increased susceptibility to illness, heart attacks, and even death by asphyxiation. Contamination from Nitrates is one of the problems that can arise after severe flooding or heavy rains in rural areas. Treatment of water containing high levels of Nitrates includes the use of Reverse Osmosis systems installed at point of use and ion exchange for a whole house solution.

With Ireland’s heavy rainfall amounts and our susceptibility to flooding the best protection against water contamination is either having a regular water test or by installing a complete whole house water system.

Solution 1: Reverse Osmosis Unit
Solution 2: UV Light Filter

Taste and Odours in Water
Taste and odour in drinking-water can be caused by a number of sources. A rotten egg smell is usually caused by the presence of Hydrogen Sulphide gas. Other causes of tastes and odours in water are microorganisms, or be of human origin, and the contamination of water from chemicals. Problems can also be caused by some water treatment systems or by substances leached from a water pipe. As a general rule to treat odours and tastes in water the use of water filters can easily rectify the problem.

Solution 1: Reverse Osmosis System
Solution 2: Water Filtration

Brown Water

Brown Water is common in Ireland and although it has no health risks it causes quite an inconvenience to any householder for running of baths to laundry problems. Brown water is due to increasing amounts of dissolved organic carbon in the water and varies from time to time throughout the year.

eirgreen can install a water treatment system that can rid brown water forever.

Solution: Brown Water Filters

Hydrogen Sulphide
Hydrogen Sulphide is a dissolved gas and if this is present in the water it is easily identifiable by a “rotten egg” smell and is similar to a stink bomb. In water it occurs naturally or can be caused by the presence of sulphate-reducing bacteria. Not only do you have a bad smell problem but Hydrogen Sulphide corrodes pipes, water heaters, tanks and can also turn water black. Treatment for Hydrogen Sulphide in water is done by chlorination and a serious of filters.

Solution: Water Filtration

See What is Causing the Contamination of your Water Supply

eirgreen can advise you on the best water treatment system to suit your needs. You may require one water filtration system or a combination of water filtration systems to ensure that you and your family have safe clean drinking water.  Ideally a Water Test is recommended to establish what is causing the contamination in your water.  See our Water Testing section below.

Water Tests - Water Testing - Testing Your Water
Your drinking water comes from two sources, either a public supply or a private well supply. If you are on a public water supply the water is tested regularly for both chemicals and bacteria as a health protection. Your drinking water should be safe to drink for you, your family and any visitors, so if you are on a private well, getting a regular water test is essential as you alone are responsible for assuring that the water is safe. There are hidden dangers lurking in the water due to an increase in pollution over the last number of years and sometimes water that appears problem free may not necessary be safe to drink. Any bacteria, e coli or nitrates in the water can cause serious illness, and remember you will not see these in the water with the naked eye. The only way to ensure your water is safe to drink is to test your drinking water at least once a year for contaminents, pollution, etc.

Less serious problems caused by water can be seen on electrical equipment in the home such as kettles, washing machines, but think about over time what these impurities will do to your body. Your health and your families health should be taken seriously so please get your water tested. A yearly water test will also give you details of the quality of the water over a period of time and you can see if there is a deterioration of the supply due to a third party.

eirgreen can provide a complete full chemical and bacteria water test and can go through the results in detail so you have a clear understanding of the quality of your water.
